And that growing enough cotton for one T0shirt requires 257 gallons of water? Find out more about why we should buy only organic fabrics at Creative Citizen where this factoid was pulled from.

Jaime Snyder had an amazing granddad. Can you imagine growing up with Buckminster Fuller as one of yoru prime mentors and grandfather? Wow. I am looking forward to speaking to Jaime, founder of The Buckminster Fuller Institute, artist and filmmaker, about Buckminster Fuller’s legacy today on Visionary Culture  Radio. This show will be archived for ongoing listening.

An Introduction To Buckminster Fuller

from www.BFI.org

“For the first time in history it is now possible to take care of everybody at a higher standard of living than any have ever known.  Only ten years ago the ‘more with less’ technology reached the point where this could be done. All humanity now has the option to become enduringly successful.”

– R. Buckminster Fuller, 1980

This confident assertion was made in 1980 by the late R. Buckminster Fuller–inventor, architect, engineer, mathematician, poet and cosmologist. As early as 1959, Newsweek reported that Fuller predicted the conquest of poverty by the year 2000.

In 1977, almost twenty years later, the National Academy of Sciences confirmed Fuller’s prediction. Their World Food and Nutrition Study, prepared by 1,500 scientists, concluded, “If there is the political will in this country and abroad… it should be possible to overcome the worst aspects of widespread hunger and malnutrition within one generation.”

Even with tragedies like Ethiopia and Somalia, it is becoming clear that, as Fuller predicted, we have arrived at the possibility of eliminating hunger and poverty in all the world within our lifetime.

Designer of Spirit Nests and producer of an absolutely full on annual musical program at Big Sur Spirit Garden, Jayson Fann is a percussionist and organizational genius. Check out the summer lineup at BigSurSpiritGarden.com to see what Jayson has been up to. I had the pleasure of staying over night in one of the nests and I swear it was the best night’s sleep I have ever had, waking and peeking through the branches out to the mountains of Big Sur. Formerly program director at Esalen, Jayson’s connections to the world of visionaries and world musicians is enormous. We certainly won’t be able to touch on everything he has been up to, however, we will certainly give it a go in this hour show tonight.

I will also be featuring the divinely inspired spiritual music of singer Faith Rivera in this special Music of Awakening Show.

TITLE :: Visionary Culture :: Creating Our Future

Location, Time and Date :: Harmony Festival, Sonoma County Fairgrounds, Saturday, June 20, 2009
5:30 PM Earth Temple Dome

How can our larger community move even further into living the new dream indicated by the 2012 shift, via inspiration into conceptualization, aspiration and visualization to land real living action steps which help us co-create successfully?

What are the core issues we are dealing with that seem like barriers to this dream—ie, economic and eco-crises, inner and outer disharmony, unwieldy and rampantly controlling social, governmental and corporate entities—and what are the specific ways of being we need to collectively and individually shift into in order to truly “anchor” this new dream?

Discussion includes the four primary levels of motivation, aspiration, activation and innovation to holographically examine what we can do on a physical level, how we can transform with our emotions, what we can imagine our new reality to be, and how we can strategize to make our collective dream of a new culture based on HARMONY come into being.

George Noory

It became official on January 1, 2003. George Noory took over the reins from retiring Art Bell to become the host of America’s most fascinating overnight radio program. Looking back on George’s life and his passion for all things unexplained, it seems almost fated that he would fulfill this unique role.

While still a teenager, George joined NICAP, the UFO organization that was a precursor to today’s MUFON. George immersed himself in the field, “so much so that I decided I wanted to go into broadcasting in order to do unusual stories in the paranormal and stories that the mainstream media didn’t want to touch,” he told After Dark. Indeed, George’s very first broadcast interview, while a young radio reporter for Detroit’s WCAR-AM, was with Roswell expert/physicist Stanton Friedman, with whom he has maintained a lifelong friendship.

Now with a 30-year history in the broadcasting field under his belt in such positions as executive television news producer and news director, George brings a wide swath of experience to the table. In fact, at age 28 he was the youngest major news market news director in the country when he was at KMSP-TV in Minneapolis. But it was just a couple of years ago that he came to the attention of Premiere Radio Networks, who heard him on his late-night radio program on KTRS in St. Louis. Known as “the Nighthawk,” George’s penchant for covering paranormal topics with enthusiasm and skill impressed Premiere. He was then brought on board to host the Sunday night Coast to Coast show. And as Art’s back problems became more severe, George was honored to fill in for him on a regular basis.

“Coast to Coast AM may just be the most unusual show I have ever witnessed or been a part of. You really almost have to be born into that arena, I think, in order to handle it. I was very lucky in that’s the way I was guiding my own career. It was this thirst to really get to the bottom of some of these stories that kept pushing me,” George said.

Other highlights of George’s life include serving nine years in the U.S. Naval Reserve and winning three Emmy Awards as a news executive. But certainly manning the helms of Coast to Coast AM is a pinnacle for George, allowing him to pursue the unexplained on a grand scale. It’s become his destiny to guide the huge audience from more than 500 radio stations through the night in this dynamic format created by Art Bell. Across America, and around the world on the Internet, George Noory’s voice rings out.

Daniel Pinchbeck
www.realitysandwich.com

Daniel is the author of Breaking Open the Head: A Psychedelic Journey into the Heart of Contemporary Shamanism. In Breaking Open the Head, Pinchbeck explored shamanism via ceremonies with tribal groups such as the Bwiti of Gabon, who eat iboga, and the Secoya people in the Ecuadorean Amazon, who take ayahuasca in their ceremonies. He also attended the Burning Man festival in Nevada, and looked at use of psychedelic substances in a desacralized modern context. Through his direct experiences and research, and influenced heavily by the work of anthroposophist Rudolf Steiner (who did not advocate the use of psychedelic substances and did not consider hallucinations to be sound spiritual perceptions), he became convinced that the shamanic and mystical view of reality had validity, and that the modern world had forfeited an understanding of intuitive aspects of being in its pursuit of rational materialism.

This awareness led to his second book, 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl, which examines prophecy through personal and philosophical approaches, and offers the hypothesis that humanity is experiencing an accelerated process of global consciousness transformation, leading to a new realization of time and space during this period. In 2012, he also explains the psi or extra-sensory perception research of Dean Radin, the theories of Graham Hancock, his own encounters with crop circles, a visit to calendar reform advocate José Argüelles, and his direct reception of prophetic material: the voice of the Mesoamerican deity Quetzalcoatl, began speaking to him during a 2004 trip to the Amazon in Brazil. At the time, he was participating in a ceremony of the Santo Daime, a Brazilian religion that uses the psychedelic brew ayahuasca as its sacrament. Through its references to 2012 and the Maya calendar in the context of New Age beliefs, Pinchbeck’s book has contributed to Mayanism. The book also details his acts of infidelity and his interest in polyamory.

Pinchbeck’s feature articles have appeared in numerous periodicals. A founding editor of Open City, a literary journal, he has recently launched a new Internet-based magazine, Reality Sandwich, offering a new paradigm for a planetary culture, in March, 2007. He is the executive producer of PostModernTimes, a series of web videos presented on the iClips Network.[1] In 2005 he co-founded The Evolver Project, with the plan to create a membership organization supporting sustainable commerce. Although Pinchbeck is no longer connected to it, a part of this project can be seen at evo.net. On December 14, 2006, Pinchbeck appeared on the television program The Colbert Report to discuss his book 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl.[2]

Starhawk’s newest book is The Earth Path: Grounding Your Spirit in the Rhythms of Nature.

Her works have been translated into Spanish, French, German, Danish, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Greek, Japanese, and Burmese. Her essays are reprinted across the world, and have been included in numerous anthologies. Starhawk’s writing is influential and has been quoted by hundreds of other authors, turning up in magazines, trade and academic press, and even inspirational calendars. Her books are often found in college curriculums. The Spiral Dance has been continuously in-print for over twenty-five years and revised twice; in 1999 HarperSanFrancisco published the Twentieth Anniversary Edition. Truth or Dare: Encounters with Power, Authority, and Mystery won the Media Alliance Meritorious Achievement Award for nonfiction in 1988. Starhawk’s first novel, The Fifth Sacred Thing, won the Lambda award for best Gay and Lesbian Science Fiction in 1994.  Many of Starhawk’s best political essays–credited with helping the global justice movement find and define itself–were collected into her book Webs of Power: Notes from the Global Uprising. At the Book Expo America, Webs of Power won a 2003 Nautilus Award from the trade association NAPRA.

Starhawk is perhaps best known as an articulate pioneer in the revival of earth-based spirituality and Goddess religion. She is a cofounder of Reclaiming, an activist branch of modern Pagan religion, and continues to work closely with the Reclaiming community (www.reclaiming.org). She consulted on and contributed to the popular trio of films known as the Women’s Spirituality series, directed by Donna Read for the National Film Board of Canada: Goddess Remembered, The Burning Times, and Full Circle. Starhawk and Donna Read recently formed their own film company, Belili Productions (www.belili.org). Their first release is Signs Out of Time (2004), a documentary on the life of archaeologist Marija Gimbutas, the scholar made major discoveries about the Goddess cultures of Old Europe. Starhawk and Donna are at work on their next film, an introduction to permaculture.

Starhawk is a veteran of progressive movements, from anti-war to anti-nukes, and is deeply committed to bringing the techniques and creative power of spirituality to political activism. Together with Penny Livingston-Stark and Erik Ohlsen, she coteaches EAT, Earth Activist Trainings, intensive seminars that combine permaculture design, political organizing, and earth-based spirituality (www.earthactivisttraining.org).

Starhawk has also recorded several tapes and CDs; most recently “Wicca for Beginners” (2002), “Wiccan Rituals and Blessings” (2003), and a four-CD set “Earth Magic” (2006), all produced by Sounds True. A songwriter on occasion, quite a few of her songs and chants turn up in rituals across the globe; they are included in songbooks and hymnals, covered by other artists, and recorded by the Reclaiming musical community.

Starhawk travels internationally teaching magic, the tools of ritual, and the skills of activism. She lives part-time San Francisco, in a collective house with her partner and friends, and part-time in a little hut in the woods in western Sonoma County, California, where she practices permaculture in her extensive gardens, and writes. Her website is www.starhawk.org.

I consider myself to be a cheerleader for bees. The interrelationships between bees and humans is so crucial ecologically, and at this time, the bees need our help. I am super excited to have my dear brother Ra Weisman on the show tonight to discuss his work with bees. Please check it out and let’s spread the bee wisdom!

Leading edge philospher, speaker and author Daniel Pinchbeck will be my guest on tonight’s Visionary Culture radio show. A subject of interest for both Daniel and I is the psychic awakening of human awareness. I recently read his post here, and asked this to be our lead topic of discussion tonight, because I think it is so important for the cultivation of our trajectory into a collective future emanating from our true natures.

In his blog post “An Extravagant Hypotheses, Daniel writes, “As a hypothesis, I propose that humanity may be undergoing a rapid transition from the biological to the psychic phase of species evolution in the next few years. The inertia of physical forces, chemical processes and cellular mechanisms, precisely coordinated over billions of years, has brought us to this make or break point. In order to continue our evolution, we need to reach a deeper level of species consciousness and self-awareness, transform our planetary culture and social systems so they serve the entire community of life, and integrate and anchor psychic capacities as part of a new paradigm and mythological substrate.” Read full post here.

We will also get a peek into the new Evolver.net social network and into what is moving Daniel these days.

Daniel is a speaker at this year’s Harmony Festival. In addition to speaking in the Earth Temple Dome, Daniel will also take part in the panel Visionary Culture : Creating Our Future, moderated by George Noory with panelists Pinchbeck, David Wolfe, Caroline Casey, Starhawk and myself, Laura Fox. Check it out!

daniel-pinchbeck-portrait

Daniel Pinchbeck has written features for The New York Times Magazine, Esquire, Wired, Harper’s Bazaar, The Village Voice, Salon, and many other publications. He is one of the founders of Open City, an art and literary journal, and an independent book publisher. He was a 1999 – 2000 Fellow of the National Arts Journalism Program at Columbia University. He has also been a columnist for The Art Newspaper of London, and an editor at Connoisseur Magazine. Born in 1966, he grew up in New York City, where his father, Peter Pinchbeck, was an abstract painter. His mother, Joyce Johnson, was part of the Beat Generation in the 1950s. She is the author of several books, including Minor Characters, a memoir. He went to Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, then worked as a magazine editor and journalist,

In the late 1990s, after years of working in the media, Pinchbeck fell into the classic existential or spiritual crisis. Life seemed to have no point or transcendent meaning. He began to feel as if he was already dead, a ghost walking around the streets of Manhattan. At some point he recalled his fascination with psychedelic mushrooms and LSD in college. He experimented again, and his experiences inspired him to travel to Nepal and India, where he visited Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and the sacred Hindu festival Kumbh Mehla.

Back in New York, he began to study shamanism and the magical plants used in rituals. On assignment, he went to Gabon, in West Africa, and took iboga, a long-lasting psychedelic rootbark, in an initiation ceremony. He visited a shaman in Oaxaca, the son of the famous shamaness Maria Sabina. He attended a conference on “Visionary Entheobotany” in Palenque, Mexico and visited Burning Man. He went down to the Ecuadorean Amazon to visit the Secoya tribe and take ayahuasca, a visionary medicine.

Breaking Open the Head describes his own process of discovery, and a profound paradigm shift. He admits to still being surprised – even extremely astonished – at what he has found. Through direct experience, Pinchbeck learned that shamanism was a real phenomenon, that direct access to the spiritual world is available to anybody who is willing to explore for themselves and escape the prevailing orthodoxies, the “irrational rationality” of the current system. He supports the perspective of Christ in the Gnostic “Gospel of Thomas,” who said: “Open the door for yourself, so you will know what is.”
